In order to be successful independent researchers, students in astrophysics need to have a strong foundation in fundamental physics, significant experience in the specifics of their individual research area, and a broad general knowledge of astronomy and astrophysics. To this end, the FSU physics department is implementing a comprehensive new curriculum in astrophysics at both the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition to the new astrophysics course offerings, we have added an astrophys…

The Physics and Astrophysics major was established in the physics department in Spring 2009. The major is designed primarily for students interested in pursuing a career in astronomy/astrophysics research. The curriculum is a rigorous physics degree, augmented by astrophysics courses intended to provide a background in the broad range of phenomena and physics unique to astronomy. Since its introduction, the major has proven quite popular, with 28 majors enrolled as of Spring 2011.
